I am a part of IMHope, a volunteer group where members interact and build rapport with the residents in the Institute of Mental Health. We plan and implement a wide range of art and craft activities to hone residents' motor skill movements and increase their engagement with people from outside their wards. We also celebrate festivities such as birthdays, Deepavali and Christmas.
Not only have these experiences enhanced my knowledge of psychology, my weekly interactions with the residents have also been very humbling. I am always heartened by the big-hearted residents who would often offer me snacks and remind me to take good care of myself. I look forward to a future where people with mental illnesses can be fully integrated into our society, rid of stigmas and prejudice.
